This is the step I skipped in 2020. I replaced the solenoid valve only to find the actual problem was a dead control board relay. The valve was fine. Stupid. Took two service calls to figure it out.

This is the one measurement that tells you the most. You need a multimeter. Set it to ohms (Ω).
I don’t have hard data on the exact failure rate of OEM vs. aftermarket coils, but based on our logs, about 70% of the “solenoid” issues we see turn out to be the coil, not the valve body. (I wish I’d tracked that more carefully from the start.)
Now you need to see if power is actually reaching the coil. This is the step that catches the electrical gremlins.
What a good reading looks like:
What I’ve learned the hard way: If voltage is present (and correct) but the coil measured open earlier, you need a new coil. If voltage is absent or low, trace back to the control board, relay, or fuse.
In September 2022, I chased a “bad solenoid” on a stand-up freezer with a defrost solenoid system. Turned out the ice machine’s solenoid was fine—the problem was a tripped breaker on a different circuit. The freezer was unrelated (ugh). Double-check your equipment tags.
This is the one a lot of people skip because it’s messy. But it’s also the most common fix for “clicks but no water” issues.
From the outside, a Manicowoc valve looks sealed and simple. The reality is that the plunger gap is tiny—even a small piece of scale can prevent it from seating, or from lifting. People assume the valve is “broken.” What they don’t see is that a proper cleaning costs $0 and takes 10 minutes.
This is my personal pet peeve. Ordering a Manicowoc solenoid valve isn’t as simple as searching for an original part number. The same physical valve may have different coil voltages depending on the machine’s serial number.

Pitfall #1: Assuming the solenoid is the problem when the water line is frozen.
We had this happen in December 2023. The ice machine was in an unheated loading dock. The solenoid clicked, the coil had voltage, but no water. Someone swapped the valve before checking the line. (Frozen pipe, $890—including parts and labor—wasted.)
Pitfall #2: Overtightening the valve fitting.
Hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a wrench is enough. Crack the plastic body and you’ll cause a small leak that’s hard to find.
Pitfall #3: Ignoring the inlet water filter.
Manicowoc machines often have a small screen filter at the valve inlet. If that screen is clogged, the solenoid works but water flow is weak or intermittent. Clean it while you’re in there.
Important: I’m sharing what I’ve learned from my own mistakes in a hospital setting. This was accurate as of early 2025. Parts and procedures can evolve. Always consult the manufacturer’s service manual for your specific model (B400, QD0212A, etc.) before doing electrical work.
