I Tried to Save $185 on a Manitowoc Ice Machine Filter. It Cost Me $8,400 Over Memorial Day Weekend.

It was 4:47 PM on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, and I was staring at a red wrench light on our Manitowoc Indigo NXT ice machine. The hotel's rooftop bar was fully booked for Saturday—three private events, a wedding party, and a sold-out Memorial Day brunch. We needed ice. A lot of it.

I called our regular tech guy. He was booked solid through Tuesday—every commercial refrigeration tech in the area is booked solid before a holiday weekend. He gave me his best guess over the phone: 'Check the water filter first. If it's not the filter, it's probably your condenser coils. He wasn't wrong. In fact, he was completely right. I just didn't listen carefully enough.

The Condenser Coil Thing That Everyone Ignores

  • If the part won't arrive with at least 48 hours of buffer before the event, it's not an 'order.' It's a 'hope.' Don't hope. Order.

We've caught 23 potential issues using this checklist in the past 18 months. Two of them would have been weekend emergencies. I can't prove we saved $16,000, but I can tell you I've slept through every holiday weekend since.

The Bottom Line on Certainty

I get it—budgets are real. $225 for a filter feels like a lot when you can get one for $52. But here's the thing: the $52 filter cost me $8,400. The $225 filter would have cost me $225.

That's a 37x return on paying for certainty. I'd argue that's the best investment I never made.
