Here’s the short version: If a Manitowoc ice machine won’t make ice, don’t book a service call before checking the basics. Check the power, check the water supply, and check that the front switch is in ICE. If the machine really does need a repair, order OEM replacement parts before you schedule labor.   2. Open the water supply. A lot of ice machine problems start because someone closed the water valve before cleaning and never opened it again. Open the valve fully.
  3. Turn the switch to ICE. There is usually a clear switch on the front or side. Move it to the ICE or ON position, not OFF or CLEAN.
  4. Wait at least five minutes. The control board may have a delay. I wait before I start messaging our maintenance group, because unnecessary panic is also a cost.
  5. Listen for the water fill. On ours, I can hear the water valve click and then a steady hum. That tells me the machine is doing its job.

If the bin full light is on, the machine may simply not need to make ice yet. A bin full is not a malfunction. If a red wrench icon appears or the machine still doesn’t start after those checks, now is the time to call a qualified service technician.

When the issue is not a switch or a closed water line, the next question is usually parts.   • If the unit sat with standing water or mold for a long time, I don’t just flip it on and expect clean ice. It needs to be cleaned and sanitized before making ice.
  • A window fan or a Vornado fan can improve airflow, but it cannot fix a room with no make-up air or a blocked air supply. If the space is constantly too hot, solve the ventilation problem instead of adding more fans.
